Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has levelled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of engaging in “politics of intimidation” following an alleged violent attack on Baruipur East MLA Bibhas Sardar.
The Trinamool Congress alleged that MLA Bibhas Sardar was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home after attending a party programme in Jaynagar, in South 24 Parganas district, on Saturday night.
The Trinamool Congress issued an official statement on social media, claiming that the opposition party’s politics of violence, intimidation, and threats had once again been exposed to the public. The party stated that the alleged brutal attack on MLA Bibhas Sardar in Jaynagar, along with the death threats he reportedly received for supporting former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, raised serious questions about the growing political violence in the state.
The party further stated that when ideological and political differences are met with brickbats, violent threats, and attempts to kill, such actions constitute a direct attack on the very spirit of democracy.
The TMC demanded the immediate identification of those responsible for the attack and strict legal action against them. The party also questioned the role of the local police, alleging that instead of maintaining law and order impartially, the authorities had displayed administrative negligence.
In its statement, the Trinamool Congress claimed that the attackers had openly threatened MLA Sardar during the incident. According to the party, one of the assailants allegedly warned him of serious consequences for his strong support of Mamata Banerjee.
Immediately after the incident, Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee spoke to MLA Bibhas Sardar over the telephone. He enquired about the MLA’s health and assured him of all possible medical and administrative assistance.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party categorically denied any involvement of its workers in the alleged attack and rejected the accusations levelled against it by the Trinamool Congress.
The local police have taken cognisance of the incident and launched a formal investigation. Authorities are examining all aspects of the case to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and identify those responsible.
The investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will depend on its findings.
