Mumbai drenched by overnight rain; orange alert issued

Mumbai: Mumbai received moderate to heavy rains overnight on Wednesday. Here, the Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange’ alert and warned of more heavy rains here on Thursday. The local Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave this information. An official from the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking said some of its buses were diverted at Sion due to water-logging at 5.45 am. Traffic was restored on the route at around 8 am and bus service was normal in Mumbai, the official said. According to BMC’s rainfall data, the intensity of rain increased after the midnight of Wednesday and Thursday. Along with this, some areas like Dadar, Mahim, Khar, Matunga and Kurla received rainfall ranging from 40 mm to 70 mm in the last 12 hours. A BMC spokesperson said that in the 24-hour period till 8 am on Thursday in Mumbai, Eastern and Western Suburbs respectively 54.

The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Mumbai center in its ‘District Forecast and Warning’ has issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The traffic on the road was normal in Mumbai during the morning rush hour, there was no report of any major water-logging, a municipal official said. Meanwhile, railway officials said local trains were running normally on both Central Railway and Western Railway routes, while there was some delay in suburban services.
